Hiking near Caracas – Avila Mountain

Hiking near Caracas at Avila Mountain to the north is a great day trip for visitors.

There are plenty of hikes and it’s a nice break from the pollution of Caracas.

To get to the mountain, start at Avila Magica (ask your taxi driver for el Parque Avila Magica).

There is a cable car there (the Teleferico) that takes you to the top for about US$14.

There are also rides and food at the bottom of the cable car, so plan on eating there.

Going to the top earlier in the day is better since there will be less haze.

Ask one of the operators to draw a suggested hike route on the map for you since there aren’t printed trail maps.

The views are spectacular. You can see from Caracas to the Caribbean on a clear day.

Caracas Airport Road Closure

In Venezuela the highway bridge between CCS airport and Caracas has broken down.

Therefore, the trip between airport and city takes now about 3-4 hours.

There is the so-called “old road”, which is not paved all the way, and a rural road that passes a mountain and makes a big detour (some 80 km), but is more reliable, as there are not too many congestions.

Taxis for this route run about $130, so be aware going into Caracas CCS airport.
