Hiking near Caracas – Avila Mountain

Pic title: El Avila, de noche (Link)

The Avila mountain to the north of Caracas is a great day trip for visitors. There’s plenty of various hikes and it’s a nice break from the pollution of Caracas.

To get to the mountain, start at Avila Magica (ask your taxi driver for el Parque Avila Magica). There is a cable car there (the Teleferico) that takes you to the top for about $14. There are also rides and food at the bottom of the cable car, so plan on eating there. Going to the top earlier in the day is better since there will be less haze. Ask one of the operators to draw a suggested hike route on the map for you since there aren’t printed trail maps.

The views are spectacular – from Caracas to the Caribbean on a clear day!
